Children's heart healthcare providers from each of the four western provinces established the Western Canadian Children's Heart Network (WCCHN). Heart surgery is performed at two of our five network centres (Edmonton and Vancouver).
Our Network's services and outcomes are compared to those of other North American centres to be sure we deliver high-quality care. As a result, it is rare for children's cases to be referred outside this region.
Our Network follows standard diagnostic, investigation, and referral protocols. Clinicians from all sites give input into treatment decisions to ensure the best care for the children we treat. Our front line staff meet regularly - in person and by telephone - to discuss service delivery.
We recruit and retain excellent clinicians and administrators, and all caregivers are involved in designing and providing children's heart services.
We are proud of the results we've helped our patients achieve.
The WCCHN is a model that should be considered by other regions with similar demographics as a way to deliver high quality children's cardiac care. Collaborative work and regular quality assurance achieves improved outcomes for all patients in the four provinces.
