BC Children's Hospital is the province's only treatment, teaching, research, and health promotion facility devoted exclusively to the health of children and youth. This 240-bed facility serves children from birth to 16 years of age, from communities across British Columbia and Western Canada. Each year, physicians, staff, and volunteers provide services for more than 145,000 patient visits and 10,000 surgical operations.
The Heart Centre at BC Children's Hospital is committed to providing leadership and excellence in the care of infants and children with congenital and acquired heart disease. This mandate extends from antenatal diagnosis via fetal echocardiography through to early adulthood. A multi-disciplinary team comprised of experts in Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Nursing, and various Allied Health fields work together to provide exemplary care to children from a family-centered perspective. Each year Children's Heart Centre performs about 250 pediatric cardiac operations and another 100 minimally invasive procedures in the hospital's cardiac catheterization lab.
The Heart Centre team works collaboratively with other teams and programs within the hospital to provide cardiac care to children and adolescents including:
- a 22 bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit including an eight bed Transitional Care
Unit;
- a 48 bed Special Care Nursery; and
- a 28 bed inpatient unit.
The Partnership Program in Pediatric Cardiology allows children with cardiac conditions to receive specialized cardiac care in their own community by a multidisciplinary team from Children's Heart Centre. Infants and children with a suspected non-acute cardiac condition or those with an established diagnosis of congenital heart disease requiring routine follow-up care are eligible for referral to the Partnership Program. The Partnership Program, initially established in 1994, continues to grow and now services these communities: Kamloops, Penticton, Vernon, Kelowna, Prince George, Terrace, Trail, Whitehorse, Victoria, and Williams Lake. Over 500 children were seen in a Partnership clinic in 2004 with plans for continued growth in 2005.
